I'm intrigued by the sound of this one, Charlotte. I've had it in my TBR for years... Many people have recommended it to me, although I've never read a review of it. Australian towns — and the characters that reside in them — can be quite quirky...

Whispering Gums

Oh, this is one of my favourite Grenvilles. It won the Orange Prize I think. I think "quirky" as Kimbofo suggests is a better way of describing it ... Felicity is ludicrous but Grenville has set h up to be like that. All the characters are to some degree exaggerated, though some more than others. It's almost a Dickens like social history but but with a 20th century Australian flavour.

Charlotte

You and Kimbofo are right, quirky is a great word for the towns and characters. I think of the characters from the mountain villages in "Upper East Tennessee" where my husband is from, well, quirky is putting the best face on it. Grenville successfully captures the little town so well that I began to miss it a day after finishing the book. It is a very different tone than The Lieutenant, but no less successful.
